New York’s Weil Gotshal & Manges has secured an agreement to merge with respected Paris firm Serra Leavy & Cazals.
Legal Week Global has established that an agreement from the French firm to formally integrate in the new year has now been reached and Weil Gotshal is in talks with the influential Paris Bar to gain regulatory approval.
One Weil Gotshal partner said: “It is basically a done deal and we are very close to completing it. There are a few technical reasons why we cannot announce it, but we anticipate it will go through by the end of the year.”
The merger — first revealed in August by Legal Week Global — will hand the top 10 US firm one of the most high-profile entrances into the Paris market for years.
Nineteen-lawyer Serra Leavy is one of the most profitable boutiques in France and focuses on corporate and commercial, litigation, TMT and tax.
Since the firm’s inception in 1992, Serra Leavy’s reputation has been cemented by its M&A and securities advice.
The two firms have worked together on a number of deals, including last month advising Vivendi Universal on the proposed sale of its Houghton Mifflin publishing company.
