Erskine Chambers’ Michael Todd QC has been elected as the new chairman of the Chancery Bar Association (ChBA), the body announced yesterday (4 June).
Todd replaces Charles Purle QC – the former head of New Square Chambers – in the role after standing unopposed in an election at the body’s annual general meeting.
He will serve up to three years in the role and will examine issues including the new Rolls Building – the proposed new home of the Chancery division – and initiatives concerning diversity on the bench and at the Bar, including Lord Neuberger’s working party on Bar access.
Commenting on his appointment, Todd said: “There is increasing demand for specialist Chancery expertise outside London. One of our main aims, going forward, is to expand further our representation in the regions, to the benefit of our clients, the Chancery Bar, and the Association.”
The change comes after Purle stepped down as ChBA chair at the end of last month to join the bench as a specialist Chancery judge on the Midlands circuit. Carolyn Walton of Maitland Chambers, meanwhile, has been re-elected as ChBA vice chair.
